Dear Team,

I hope this message finds you well. As we work together to ensure the smooth operation and continued improvement of our school system, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of adhering to the proper leadership channels when corresponding on district matters.

Lines of Authority and Responsibility
The lines of direct authority are those approved by the Board of Education and are reflected in our district organization charts. These lines represent not only a clear direction of authority and responsibility but also serve as important pathways for communication and collaboration within the district. By following these established structures, we ensure that all staff members are informed and that matters are addressed at the appropriate levels.

Referral of Matters
When an issue or matter requires administrative action, personnel should refer it to the administrator to whom they are directly responsible. If needed, the matter can then be referred to the next higher administrator. It is essential that all personnel keep their immediate administrator informed of their activities, as transparency and communication help us maintain a cohesive and efficient district.

Complaint Resolution Process
It is also important to note that School Board Policy G-18 outlines how we resolve complaints here in SLCSD.  This ensures that all staff members have access to a fair process in case they wish to challenge a decision, while also respecting the established leadership channels. The district highly encourages individuals to try to resolve their concerns at the lowest level. To that end, the district suggests that the individual making a complaint discuss the relevant issues with the person about whom s/he is complaining if the complainant feels s/he cannot approach the person with whom s/he has a concern, s/he can fill out the G-18: Complaint Resolution Request Form and submit it to Respondent’s supervisor.

Two-Way Flow of Communication
While the lines of authority represent direction, they also serve as avenues for the two-way flow of ideas and feedback. Collaboration and open communication are key to continuously improving the programs and operations of our school system. I encourage everyone to use these channels not only to report issues but also to share ideas and suggestions that can benefit our students and staff.

Thank you for your continued dedication to maintaining clear and respectful communication, and for your commitment to supporting the success of our students and schools. Together, we can ensure that our leadership processes function smoothly and that we work collaboratively toward our shared goals.

If you would like a refresher for which area director is responsible for which school, it can be found here.

We are pleased to announce that a new contract with Wasatch Gardens has been finalized, providing an excellent educational option for our schools. This initiative supports hands-on learning while utilizing community resources.

To clarify, the district is not pursuing the expansion or promotion of additional gardens currently. Schools with existing gardens may continue to use them for educational purposes. However, no new gardens, plantings, or expansions will be approved or allowed.

It is important to note that the unauthorized creation or expansion of gardens on school property, including pollinator gardens, is strictly prohibited. As outlined in Board Policy G-10, only designated facilities staff are authorized to make alterations or changes to district properties. Administrators and teachers are explicitly prohibited from making such changes.

If any unauthorized garden or alteration is found, the responsible parties will be subject to the consequences stated in Board Policy G-10. This includes a minimum fine of $500.00, which will be used to restore the space to its original condition. Restoration of any altered space will occur in every instance, regardless of the circumstances.

We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to district policies and ensuring our facilities remain consistent with district standards. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Administrators,

I hope this finds you well. I’d like to kindly remind you of Board Policy G-10, which applies to all district facilities, and ask that this be communicated regularly to your staff to avoid any confusion or issues going forward.

Key Points of Board Policy G-10:

  1. Facilities Staff are the only district personnel authorized to perform maintenance, repairs, or alterations in and around school buildings.
  2. Teachers, staff, and administrators are explicitly prohibited from making any alterations, changes, or maintenance to rooms, spaces, or district facilities.
  3. Unauthorized Changes Will Be Restored:
    • If alterations or changes are discovered, the Facilities team will restore the affected area to its prior condition.
    • Costs for restoration (including materials, paint, and labor) will be charged back to the school.

It’s important to understand that repeated issues or further unauthorized alterations may result in additional costs to the school and responsible staff.

To avoid disruptions, please ensure all staff are aware of this policy and remind them that requests for any changes or maintenance must go through the proper channels by contacting the Facilities Department within Auxiliary Services. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we work together to maintain safe, efficient, and consistent learning environments across the district. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
