Subject: ESL Endorsements
Summary:
In the Salt Lake City School District, every educator plays an important role in supporting English learners. As an administrator, you can choose to complete the full ESL endorsement, or just complete three classes for the modified endorsement.
Endorsement Options
- A state ESL endorsement, recognized by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE); or
- A district-modified ESL endorsement, recognized within SLCSD:
- Understanding Language Acquisition and Cognition
- Foundations of Cultural Diversity
- Family and Community Engagement in ESL Education
The state ESL endorsement may be earned by:
- Completing five graduate-level courses with a grade of C or better; or
- Passing the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Praxis Exam (5362); and
- Submitting your application to the USBE to place the endorsement on your license.
Rationale:
This is a district requirement outlined in your employment contract.

- The next cohort will begin in April 2027, and registration information will be emailed to all educators in February 2027.
