Dear Team,

Please be advised that all schools and buildings are expected to participate in the Great Utah ShakeOut on Thursday, April 17 at 10:15 AM. There will then be a radio check test at 10:30 and further information will be shared about that shortly.

This statewide earthquake drill is a valuable opportunity to engage our students and staff in a real-world emergency preparedness scenario. To maintain consistency across the district, we ask that everyone begins the drill at exactly 10:15 AM.

What You Need to Do:

  1. Conduct the drill with full participation from staff and students at 10:15 AM.
  2. Focus on engaging your school or building in meaningful emergency response actions.
  3. Report any successes, challenges, or concerns to your assigned Area Director after the event.

Important Resources:

Before planning your drill, please visit https://www.shakeout.org/index.html.
The website includes:

  1. Step-by-step guidance for organizing your drill
  2. Flyers and information in multiple languages to support your school community
  3. A place to register your school as a ShakeOut participant and record your activities

We strongly encourage every school to register and take full advantage of the tools provided.

If you need assistance or have questions, please contact Christina Diaz in Facilities at christina.diaz@slcschools.org  or (801) 886-8927

Thank you for your attention to this important effort and for helping ensure we’re all prepared.

We are pleased to announce that a new contract with Wasatch Gardens has been finalized, providing an excellent educational option for our schools. This initiative supports hands-on learning while utilizing community resources.

To clarify, the district is not pursuing the expansion or promotion of additional gardens currently. Schools with existing gardens may continue to use them for educational purposes. However, no new gardens, plantings, or expansions will be approved or allowed.

It is important to note that the unauthorized creation or expansion of gardens on school property, including pollinator gardens, is strictly prohibited. As outlined in Board Policy G-10, only designated facilities staff are authorized to make alterations or changes to district properties. Administrators and teachers are explicitly prohibited from making such changes.

If any unauthorized garden or alteration is found, the responsible parties will be subject to the consequences stated in Board Policy G-10. This includes a minimum fine of $500.00, which will be used to restore the space to its original condition. Restoration of any altered space will occur in every instance, regardless of the circumstances.

We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to district policies and ensuring our facilities remain consistent with district standards. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Administrators,

I hope this finds you well. I’d like to kindly remind you of Board Policy G-10, which applies to all district facilities, and ask that this be communicated regularly to your staff to avoid any confusion or issues going forward.

Key Points of Board Policy G-10:

  1. Facilities Staff are the only district personnel authorized to perform maintenance, repairs, or alterations in and around school buildings.
  2. Teachers, staff, and administrators are explicitly prohibited from making any alterations, changes, or maintenance to rooms, spaces, or district facilities.
  3. Unauthorized Changes Will Be Restored:
    • If alterations or changes are discovered, the Facilities team will restore the affected area to its prior condition.
    • Costs for restoration (including materials, paint, and labor) will be charged back to the school.

It’s important to understand that repeated issues or further unauthorized alterations may result in additional costs to the school and responsible staff.

To avoid disruptions, please ensure all staff are aware of this policy and remind them that requests for any changes or maintenance must go through the proper channels by contacting the Facilities Department within Auxiliary Services. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we work together to maintain safe, efficient, and consistent learning environments across the district. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
